The one cichlid really suited to cool conditions, mentioned elsewhere on these pages, is
the Texas Cichlid. I have also heard that the Convict Cichlid,
Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum, lives happily at room temperature but haven't
encountered a hobbyist who has kept them under these conditions. So I can't suggest
a minimum temperature with confidence, though Frey
recommends 15° C which is probably realistic. Frey also gives 10° C
as the minimum for the Jack Dempsey, Cichlasoma biocellatum, a very hardy
species. Finally I have come across an, obscure, brief reference in a magazine which
claims that the blue acara, Aequidens pulcher, is a potential 'cool tropical', but have
so far found no firm evidence to support this; so, until we know more:
"ya turns down the thermostat at ya own risk with this one!".
