Lemon Barb
(Barbus schuberti)
This little barb from southern China is supposed to be a colour variety of
Barbus semifasciolatus. It's a tough cookie, being hardy and easy to
breed. It will live happily out in the pond with goldfish in a mediterranean
climate with water temperatures down to 8° C in the winter. It's a greedy,
ominivorous feeder enjoying flaked food, wheatgerm, whiteworms and other live
foods. And it's very long-lived, some of the writer's specimens being seven
or eight years old. There's an attractive new variety of lemon barb that has
an extra sprinkling of silvery, iridescent scales which make it look great in
the outdoor pond.
