Texas Cichlid
(Cichlosoma cyanoguttatum)

This grows into a very beautiful but rather mean cichlid that needs plenty of space. I write this advisedly as I know of several enthusiasts over the years who've given theirs away because they couldn't stand them! But Derek McInerny describes it as mild mannered, so perhaps, like many cichlids, it just needs plenty of space. It's also said to be a bit fussy about needing good water conditions. But it is one cichlid that's supposed to tolerate low temperatures. John Cornelius says: "Very hardy, wintering at 50° F (10° C) with no problems". He then goes on to say that it could be kept under exactly the same conditions as goldfish. I wonder how far north its natural range extends in the United States, and what the lowest water temperatures are in this environment? If you have this information please email me so I can update this page. Thank you.

For more information on the temperature requirements of other cichlids see the Cichlids page for this site.
